Infrastructure construction in a sensitive heritage and conservation environment in Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal.
Emakhosini Heritage Park in Zululand is a protected area of significant ecological and cultural importance. It encompasses the ancestral heartland of the Zulu nation and contains sensitive riparian and woodland environments. Infrastructure development within the park requires a higher standard of environmental management and planning than typical construction work.
Charles was engaged by GWi Project Managers to oversee road construction and river crossing work within the park. This involved site supervision throughout the construction phase, contractor management and performance monitoring, environmental compliance in accordance with the applicable authorisations, and reporting to the client and relevant authorities.
Construction in a heritage and conservation context demands particular attention to minimising erosion, managing drainage carefully and limiting disturbance to watercourses and riparian vegetation. River crossings were constructed to allow wildlife movement and minimise the hydraulic impact on stream flow. Earthworks were designed to avoid unnecessary removal of indigenous vegetation and to ensure that disturbed surfaces were stabilised promptly.
Environmental compliance monitoring was conducted throughout the project to verify that construction activities remained within the conditions of the environmental authorisation and that any unforeseen impacts were identified and addressed promptly.
