First-Party FSC Auditing for Sappi Forests Group Scheme

Systematic internal FSC auditing across one of South Africa's largest commercial forestry group schemes.

FSC-certified Sappi plantation forestry in South Africa

Project Overview

Sappi Forests operates one of South Africa's largest commercial forestry group schemes, spanning multiple regions and hundreds of thousands of hectares of plantation. Maintaining FSC group scheme certification across such a large and geographically dispersed operation requires systematic internal auditing against FSC standards on an ongoing basis.

Scope of Work

Conducting first-party (internal) FSC audits across Sappi Forests plantation operations over more than a decade. Identifying non-conformances against FSC Principles and Criteria. Producing audit reports and working with operational management on corrective action planning.

Approach

First-party auditing at scale requires a consistent and systematic approach to assessing compliance across a large number of management units. Charles developed a structured audit methodology adapted to the South African plantation context, covering all relevant FSC Principles and Criteria including forest management planning, environmental impact, worker rights, community relations and monitoring and evaluation.
