Managing a 300,000 Tonne Per Year Harvesting Contract in Zululand

Project Overview

Managing contracts for one of KwaZulu-Natal's largest commercial timber harvesting operations requires coordinating multiple harvesting crews, contractors, equipment fleets and logistics chains simultaneously. This engagement with Unitrans Freight placed Charles as Contracts Manager for a Zululand-based operation processing 300,000 tonnes of timber per annum.

Scope of Work

Overseeing all aspects of contractor performance across harvesting systems. Managing the operational interface between the harvesting operation and its forestry clients. Coordinating timber logistics from stump to delivery point. Ensuring compliance with safety, environmental and productivity requirements. Managing contractor relationships and performance measurement.

Approach

Large-scale harvesting contract management demands close attention to machine utilisation, downtime patterns, crew productivity and timber quality. Work study principles were applied to identify bottlenecks and improve system throughput. Contractor management was structured around clear performance agreements, regular site monitoring and structured reporting.
