Wildfire damage investigation in a plantation forest

What it involves

A wildfire investigation determines where a fire started, how it spread, and what caused it. This information is critical for insurance claims, civil litigation, and preventing future incidents. Charles is a qualified Wildland Fire Investigator Type 3 — one of relatively few formally qualified investigators operating in the South African forestry sector.

The investigation process

Scene examination begins as soon as possible after the fire has been controlled, before evidence is disturbed. Charles examines burn patterns, char angles and fire-line indicators to establish the area of origin. Within the area of origin, physical evidence is used to determine the cause — whether human activity, lightning, equipment failure or other source.

Documentation and reporting

Findings are documented through systematic photography, sketches and written records. The investigation report presents the methodology, evidence and conclusions in a format suitable for submission to insurers, courts or internal management. Charles is available to give expert witness testimony when required.

Forest industry focus

Wildfires in commercial forestry represent major financial losses. Understanding origin and cause is essential not only for recovering losses through insurance but for identifying liability and improving operational fire prevention.
