Technical Advisory for the Chromolaena Control Programme, KwaZulu-Natal

Field-based technical guidance to improve the efficacy and consistency of triffid weed control operations across KwaZulu-Natal.

Chromolaena odorata triffid weed control in KwaZulu-Natal

Project Overview

Chromolaena odorata — commonly known as triffid weed — is one of the most aggressive invasive alien plant species in KwaZulu-Natal, forming dense stands that displace indigenous vegetation and represent a significant fire hazard in forestry areas. The Chromolaena Project, facilitated by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, coordinates control efforts across conservation and forestry land in the province.

Scope of Work

Providing technical advisory services to the Chromolaena Control Programme. This included technical assessment of control operations, guidance on treatment methods and herbicide selection, and contractor mentorship across Working for Water (WFW) funded operations.

Approach

Effective Chromolaena control requires understanding the species' growth cycle, re-invasion patterns and the limitations of different control methods. Charles provided practical, field-based technical guidance to programme coordinators and contractors, helping to improve the efficacy and consistency of control operations across the programme area.
